OCTOBER – A Month to Care for Mind and Body

OCTOBER – A Month to Care for Mind and Body
The world outside Omegayksi’s window October 1st,2025

As autumn arrives in Finland, October brings shorter days, cooler air, and a reminder to care for ourselves. It’s also a month dedicated to global health awareness — especially World Mental Health Day (October 10th) and Breast Health Day (October 15th) during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

World Mental Health Day – October 10th

Mental health is a key part of overall wellbeing, yet it often gets overlooked. Every year on October 10, people worldwide mark World Mental Health Day, led by the World Federation for Mental Health and supported by the WHO. The goal: raise awareness, talk openly, and improve access to care.

In Finland, MIELI Mental Health Finland runs events, campaigns, and community support. Take this day to check in with yourself — go for a walk, call a friend, or rest. If things feel heavy, remember Finland has free helplines and support services ready to listen.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month & Breast Health Day – October 15th

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, symbolized by the pink ribbon. In Finland, Breast Health Day on October 15 highlights early detection and healthy living, led by Europa Donna.

Early detection saves lives. Women aged 50–69 in Finland are invited every two years for free mammography screening — proven to reduce breast cancer deaths.

Healthy habits matter too: regular exercise, balanced eating, and limiting alcohol all lower risk. The Finnish Cancer Society (Syöpäjärjestöt) offers help, resources, and support for patients and families. This day stands for awareness and solidarity.

Mind and Body Together

These October campaigns remind us that mental and physical health are connected. Caring for one supports the other.

Take time for both:

• Go for a walk in crisp autumn air

• Reflect and rest your mind

• Book your health screening

This October, wear both green and pink ribbons- and celebrate caring for your health in every form.
